COVID hospitalizations in Los Angles County fell below 5,000 people for the first time in seven weeks on Thursday. Continually declining hospitalization numbers are the best indicator that holiday surge seems to be behind us.
There are 4,990 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Los Angeles County on Thursday. That’s 265 fewer people than were hospitalized on Wednesday when there were 5,165 people hospitalized.
The last time there were fewer than 5,000 people hospitalized with COVID in the county was on Dec. 17, when there 4,864 people in the hospital. Then, the next day, Dec. 18, there were 5,100 people in the hospital and the numbers continued rising.
The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098 people hospitalized.
The state reported there are currently 1,333 people in the ICU in LA County.
County health officials announced 239 more COVID-related deaths on Thursday. The county’s cumulative death toll is now 17,539 people.
The highest number of COVID deaths in a single day in the county is 318 deaths, recorded on Jan. 8, while the second highest is 316 deaths, which occurred on Jan. 30.
LA County reported 5,028 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday. The county now has a cumulative total of 1,134,338 cases since the pandemic began in March.
To date, more than 5.56 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Of those tested, an overall average of 19% are testing positive.
West Hollywood recorded 13 new cases for a cumulative total of 1,976 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative death total is 24 deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 7 new cases for a total of 2,276 cases and no new deaths for a total of 23 deaths.
- Carthay neighborhood – 1 new case for a total of 840 cases and no new deaths for a total of 49 deaths.
- Century City – 1 new case for a total of 539 cases and no new deaths for a total of 11 deaths.
- Culver City – 7 new cases for a total of 1,944 cases and no new deaths for a total of 69 deaths.
- Hollywood – 20 new cases for a total of 4,879 cases and no new deaths for a total of 53 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 40 new cases total of 7,352 cases and no new deaths for a total of 167 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – 7 new cases for a total of 829 cases and no new deaths for a total of 14 deaths.
- Park La Brea – 2 new cases for a total of 521 cases and no new deaths for a total of 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 19 new cases for a total of 3,990 cases and no new deaths for a total of 122 deaths.
The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border.
The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
