New COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles County rose above 2,200 on Thursday, the highest single-day total in two weeks. Those higher numbers interrupt what had been a downward trend in new infections.

LA County reported 2,253 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday. The last time the county had higher than 2,200 new infections was on Feb. 20 when 2,393 cases were reported.

Health officials say they will watch the numbers closely, hoping this higher number is just a fluke and not the start of another rise in infections.

The county now has a cumulative total of 1,198,098 cases since the pandemic began in March.

There are 1,401 people currently in the hospital in Los Angeles County according to county health officials. That’s 75 fewer people in the hospital than on Wednesday when there were 1,476 people hospitalized.

The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098 people hospitalized.

There are 429 people currently in the ICU, according to the state. The county’s total ICU capacity is about 2,500 beds.
