OP/ED: Bullets over West Hollywood

Can you believe this is the West Hollywood we live in today?

A bullet through the glass window of city hall this past week, dog nappings, car jackings, smash and grab robberies, theft from mailboxes, sidewalk robberies, home invasions, cell phone thefts at bars and nightclubs, assaults, burglary of homes, apartments and condos, rapes, sexual assaults, stolen mail, packages and Amazon deliveries and more.

Guns galore now have criminals preying about for daytime and nighttime robberies.

Our once wonderful West Hollywood has turned into a place where many of my friends, neighbors and acquaintances are afraid to go out after 6pm.

One female neighbor I know confessed to me that she used like to take nightly walks on but now does not do it anymore for fear of being robbed or assaulted.

Really? This is acceptable for our City of West Hollywood?

And with the well-known and popular Citizen app you can see the ongoing mayhem 24/7.

Are you shocked? Are you surprised? Have you given up? Are you hoping that we can finally see Sheriff’s bike and foot patrols on a daily basis that equal the over $20 million we pay our Sheriff’s Department?

Have you seen enough?

Do you still like living here or are you embarrassed to call West Hollywood your home?

Our city has now attracted outrageous crime due to our popularity. And with everyone still wearing face masks the suspects easily blend into our city’s streets to be able to suddenly get away because their full face is never seen or recognized.

When is enough enough as residents, business owners and visitors to say: “No more!”

I challenge all of us to get involve more and make the change now.

Here are the email addresses of our city council, public safety and our Captain Edward Ramirez and Lieutenant Moulder to ask for help:

I am so disgusted with the direction this city has taken. So totally disgusted. Anyone that voted for Horvath, Shyne & Erickson are to blame. VOTE. THEM. OUT.

I’m thinking that protecting residents of WeHo is secondary to a particular politician Horwith. Her entire tenure to date has been a mission to enrich herself. She lied to all of us to get elected and has continued to lie and deny. Interestingly, her vote is usually the decider for every expansion by developers who chop away at the core of our little city. Her aspirations of higher office are on view each day. She skirts substantive issues and constantly blah blah blahs. Feeling less safe here is because we are less safe. We attract lots and lots of folks… Read more »

Wow! Jerome Cleary describes Dante’s 7th circle of hell and calls it West Hollywood. I’m sorry he is so terrified of ordinary urban living. In 1994, a friend and I were mugged at gunpoint on a residential backstreet in WeHo across from my apartment. My friend was robbed of his expensive watch and several hundred dollars in cash. We were forced to lie in the street as the mugger ran away. Fortunately it happened in the brilliance of a streetlight so we were able to provide a fair description of the mugger to a sheriff’s deputy who turned up in… Read more »

Drop in crime? Crime is up 167% in West Hollywood from this time last year. Our city is ranked near the bottom of safest cities in the country.

All you say is true—I no longer feel safe here…It is very sad. I pray those in charge of our city can do something serious about it—and fast!!

You’re putting your faith in elected officials, whose only accomplishments are failure. I stand by. my comment.

ZERO sympathy for West Hollywood. It is not a dictatorship. YOU elected the politicians who govern. Your misguided ideologies have led you here. You support bad ideas from bad actors in a desperate attempt to identify as part of the “cool group”. The left DESTROYS everything it touches. One need look no further than Austin, Texas. The liberal exodus from blue states has ruined the community. Great job!

Puhleeze. Enough divisiveness. Our country is finally back on the right track and it has nothing to do with party but with people of integrity who got elected by the majority of voters. There are good people governing WeHo but they seem outnumbered by some who are selling us out. Time for change.

I lived in West Hollywood from 1968 to 1978. It was NEVER this bad. In the middle to late 70’s was a great time to be living there. I lived on Westmount Dr. and my final residence was was on Rugby Dr. I would walk to The Greenery, Blue Parrot, Revolver, Jim Morris’s Gym and to Studio One from where I lived. Most of my friends eventually moved away like I did. You do that when you get older, especially if you’re in a relationship. It’s sad to think that West Hollywood has so much crime. I remember the police… Read more »

Guns ain’t the problem. It’s the criminals. An armed, lawful citizenry is going to change the tied without firing a shot, believe it or not. As the Pink Pistols say, Armed gays don’t get bashed. Someone getting into a jewelry store with his little crappy Hi-Point trying to rob everyone in there’s going to change careers when the owner is pointing a carbine in his face. Gun rights are women’s rights, trans rights, gay rights, minorities’ rights…criminals will always be armed, don’t be a victim. If you think getting rid of all guns is possible, remember that always leads to… Read more »

If you are referring to the jewelry store robbery on La Cienege, that occured at 4:30 a.m. No one was inside. No one was at risk. Unless you are suggesting that all business owners live on/in their businesses, like greengrocers of old, you might want to rethink your statement. Also your anti-gun rant, which no one but you has mentioned.

Last August I attended Outfest, the annual gay film festival. I stayed at a hotel on Sunset Blvd for five nights. The room was OK and the area was a little seedy considering it was across the street from Hollywood High School. One night while trying to sleep,I heard a few rounds of gunfire then more gunfire a few minutes later.Knowing the crime rates has risen across the county,I really was not surprised at what had happened. Criminals don’t respect boundaries,so you can expect violent crime no matter where you are. Criminals don’t care if the crimes they commit occur in the… Read more »

I wonder if there is a correlation of the increase in crime to the pot shops?

And our DA Gascon who is openly and proudly VERY soft on crime has likely emboldened those who are up to no good. I was recently the victim of a crime here in WeHo and the perp was apprehended, but the day of his court appearance Gascon dropped the charges because the victim (me) was not actually injured.

Yes, I was visiting a client (clothing store) last week and saw an extraordinary number of pimps and their victims walking in. And I’ve seen a number of individuals going and selling high end belts, and what they do is they take that cash and go buy weed up the street. And on top of that, it’s highly likely they got these items in the organized retail theft that’s been running rampant throughout our state.

Simply put, the council majority DOES NOT CARE about the residents. It is not about us any more, just them. I no longer feel safe in my own city. I will not support any of them for re-election. Kick the bums out!

It hasn’t been about the residents of Weho or quality of life since the inception of this city. It’s only about dollars and development. I lived in Weho from 1978 to 1999. There are better places to live in the LA area.

Gotta say yeah crime beyond belief.

But ABC EVENING NEWS w David Muir reported the Shooting “IN THE CITY OF WEST HOLLYWOOD” involving Justin Bieber.

Just felt … I bet it wasn’t actually in city of WeHo.

Tada this crime on La Cienega South of WeHo LAPD and not in city of WeHo.

Odd kind of story would expect in WeHo, but ABC Top News getting it wrong. Don’t know why I got a “feeling” and checked.

Where is that “feeling” in me when I buy a lotto ticket.

It’s sometimes hard to know exactly if it is West Hollywood, or Los Angeles, as the border here in Weho is extremely odd. Even if not exactly in Weho, that shooting was as close to Weho as is possible.
