Give your two cents on the Viper Room/8850 Sunset Project at 6 p.m. Thursday

For those of you who have been following the Viper Room/8850 Sunset, the main news is that the developers have brought on a new architectural firm, the building has been redesigned, it has been reduced by three stories and is now proposed to be 12 stories high.

However all the proposed uses in the property are basically the same, just now in an even smaller space. They have only reduced the hotel rooms by three, the condos by seven. They have added another restaurant to the street level for a total of five restaurants in the project ( one rooftop, four street-level). There is still a large conference room / banquet hall. There will still be a club called the Viper Room. We don’t know how many parking spaces they have removed but we assume they have.

There is to be a Design Review Committee Hearing on Thursday, April 28th which you are welcome to attend. Details below.

Was the architect munching on Necco Wafers for inspiration? Seriously, a considerable improvement over Godzilla and hopefully they will work out the streetscape/commercial configuration to include the local neighborhood.

The Viper Room was a landmark and an institution and a community of people who went to enjoy rock music for many many years. I saw such great bands there from Pearl Jam to Adam Ant. I’ve rocked alongside major icons like Anthony Kiedis from the chili peppers and Flea and so many others. And you’d see the same people week after week and you would see a rockstar even behind the bar on occasion. And future rock fans won’t have that anymore. You can have your fake Viper Room in your classy fancy little hotel, but you’re never going… Read more »

I thought the maximum permitted height along all of Sunset Boulevard has been 3 or 4 stories for decades, yet there are so many exceptions made and these huge buildings get built. It would be interesting to see a chart or graph linking building height approved, against campaign “donations” and outright bribes the crooks on the weho city council have taken since day one. Isn’t there something called the “Sunset Specific Plan”, that is still in force, and the permitted height is like 35 or 45 feet maximum? How do they go from 35 feet to 150 feet actually built?… Read more »

Actually the Sunset Specific Plan was adopted in the mid-90s and it provided for all sorts of bonuses, including height increases, for developers who put together multiple parcels. At the time the Strip was at one of its’ low cycles and the City wanted the development. But since then the SSP has been tweaked in various ways that provide for more development and arguably, less benefit to the City. But this site was never a Sunset Specific target sight so it was not entitled to height or density bonuses under the Plan. But this proposal is still an improvement over… Read more »

VAST IMPROVEMENT from what was originally proposed and a HUGE improvement over the dump that currently lines that stretch of Sunset. Get it built.

Where’s the classic gritty rock history, Viper Room? While the building design is overall aesthetically pleasing, if the Viper Room wasn’t part of it, I just feel sad thinking about the lost history and vibe such a drastic change to the Viper Room would make. This dressed up version loses all credibility as a rock ‘n roll main stay. The same thing happened to CBGBs. Bummer.
