Inmate who escaped in WeHo recaptured

A man suspected of robbery who escaped while being escorted to a bus on the grounds of the sheriff’s West Hollywood Station Friday was found and arrested after being at large for more than 10 hours.

The man — later identified by authorities as 22-year-old Jeremiah Pike — escaped while in a loading area at the station in the 700 block of North San Vicente Boulevard shortly before 7 a.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported. Authorities also noted the escape occurred while Pike was being taken to court.

Deputies set up a perimeter in the area, though were unable to find the man in the surrounding area. CBS2 reported surveillance video captured Pike using a black T-shirt to cover his handcuffed hands as he stood nearby a business, in which he allegedly entered and asked for permission to use a phone.

Additional surveillance footage appeared to show Pike entering a ride share with an unidentified person, but the sheriff’s department could not confirm if deputies were searching for additional suspects in Pike’s alleged escape.

Pike was located and arrested about 5:45 p.m. in the 6300 block of Glade Avenue, near Topanga Canyon Boulevard, in Woodland Hills, Deputy Veronica Fantom of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau told City News Service.

The cost of searching for the suspect which the department lost, from helicopters to ground support should be deducted from the budget and then maybe they will act right and actually do the job they signed up for.

Haaa, no deduction from our WeHo Sheriff’s budget. Those responsible for the escape were not your West Hollywood cops. They were the bus deputies from downtown that take suspects to court. Which means the city of WeHo will not pay a penny for this.

Last evening at PS Commusdion Lt. Lapkin pointed out that the Sheriff Dept had already handed off the arrested individual bound for a court appearance to the transportation unit.

Next time a prisoner is seen handcuffed perhaps Commissioner
Soon Shiong would prefer to see them draped in a blanket of roses like the Kentucky Derby. 🙄

How does this happen? This is exactly why we defund the police. We should take the amount they pay out each from from unjust arrest and other lawsuits and make them work with that budget. How do you let an inmate escape and end up in the valley?!

Lesson Learned! Maybe LASD should invest in leg shackles? and/or closer inspection of prisoners at all times? Maybe if City Council had not reduced the number of Sheriffs they would have ample staff? This could have turned out much worse. Meanwhile how many thousands of dollars spent with helicopters and search teams?

He only escaped because he was late for an interview with a Block by Block.

This charade wouldn’t have happened if Barney Fife were in charge.

I presume the idiot “defund the police” majority on the city council’s policy of less sheriffs around meant they were understaffed, and couldn’t watch the guy in custody. Maybe they were too busy taking Sepi to Walgreen’s for some needed medication, or maybe that Oliver guy felt it was time to do a fun “Cops” tv show style “ride around” to count the homeless or count the closed storefronts around town. Or maybe Lindsey Horvath, fresh from her Paris, France 2 week vacation felt the city was too unsafe due to her policies, that she wanted an escort to deposit… Read more »

If you didn’t have something to whine about, you’d be even more overbearing than you are now.

Oh I see. We’re not supposed to “whine” about an inmate escaping, we’re just supposed to say how great a job the city council is doing defunding the sheriffs. Thanks for setting me straight.

Did Sepi’s Mall Cops make a citizen’s arrest and take him into custody?

Couldn’t happen. Sepi Shyne’s Mall Cops are always on a break. Like Sepi Shyne’s lugubrious break from the reality she along with Horvath and Erickson are destroying West Hollywood.

Happy this has been solved but the story makes very little sense. How does a handcuffed individual escape from the Sheriff’s Station in handcuffs being loaded into transportation for court? How did he get out of the enclosed yard?

Then he winds up at Anawalt Lumber uses their phone and takes a Uber to Woodland Hills? Seems preposterous.

Alice in Wonderland or Peter PanVille. Correct descriptions of West Hollywood. Have always listed my address as Los Angeles as I prefer not to be associated with the nonsenses. When folks ask where exactly I describe it as “on the border of WH” which is technically correct, I then receive unsolicited remarks and questions about the nutty and outrageous behavior which is absolutely true. I’m neither a brand nor a letter.

Just found out from a reliable source that LASD did not find him. Someone talked him into turning himself in over the phone. LASD will take credit for the capture until the facts come out. This is precisely why the WH station needs a civilian oversight committee who would be aware of the schedule of bus loads of criminals (even those presumed innocent) coming to town and stop it from happening. There needs to be a better system whereby detainees can make a court appearance by zoom.
