Learn how to add a dwelling unit onto your residential property

The City of West Hollywood invites residential property owners in West Hollywood to participate in one of two upcoming information sessions about its Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Pilot Program. The West Hollywood ADU Pilot Program is a new affordable housing initiative to incentivize property owners to create an affordable rental unit on a single-family or multifamily property. The program offers comprehensive assistance for financing, designing, permitting, and constructing a new ADU in the City of West Hollywood. The program is also offering low interest loans (up to $150,000) to design and build ADUs via conversion of existing accessory structures, new construction, or on multifamily developments in the City. Conversion projects include converting an existing garage or other on-site structure; new construction includes ground-up or prefabricated modular units; multifamily development includes detached or attached, conversion, or new construction.

Applicants for the West Hollywood ADU Pilot Program must meet the following criteria: a single-family property where the ADU will be located must be owner-occupied for the past year (one year) as the property owner’s primary residence; and for either a single-family or multifamily property the property owner must rent the ADU to a Section 8 voucher holder for a minimum of seven continuous years.  West Hollywood ADU Pilot Program applications will be released on Monday, August 1, 2022 and must be submitted digitally by 5 p.m. on Friday, September 30, 2022.

Two information sessions about the West Hollywood ADU Pilot Program will take place on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 – one virtual and one in-person. A Zoom webinar will take place at 12:30 p.m., advanced registration is required. An in-person session will take place at 6 p.m. at the West Hollywood Community Center at Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard, in Room 1. Advance registration is not required for the in-person session; attendees may drop in. For up-to-date schedule information and details, please visit www.weho.org/calendar.

I know how NOT to add a dwelling somewhere: A tent, some lumber and plywood, and a tarp!! yet the Building department does NOTHING about these encampments. But they sure will hand out citations if you go one minute past quiet hours or hire illegal workers. Go figure! Use the BDS to cite illegally built encampments NOW!!!

Jeff, with all due respect, you guys LOVE to reassess property value, its more money in the County’s pocket. Yet some homebuyers are still paying property taxes on the value they paid 15 years ago!! How is that fair and equitable? Shouldn’t everyone pay their fair share? Instead you tax new home buyers making it impossible to afford buying here. Your property taxes should not be the cost of a 2BR apt in most cities.

Most of West Hollywood is multi-unit housing which is rental property,so most property owners probably won’t be interested.The owners of R1 residential might be interested if their properties can fit in a ADU.

I think some owners would think twice before allowing an unknown person live in their backyard,especially if their lot was tight for space.I suppose a relative would be the first choice for someone to live in that space.

Elaborate Dog Places. Not sure if the local ordinance would allow ponies but perhaps chickens which one can maintain in Mid-Wilshire Think of indulging in a Locally Grown Fresh Eggs Enterprise. Different people could hatch different types of eggs….Rhode Island Reds on Rangley, Plymouth Rock on West Mount, Speckled Sussex on Dorrington.
