The plaintiffs in the legal case against Prop 8, who along with the case’s attorneys served as community grand marshals in the LA Pride parade, are among those whom the city of West Hollywood will recognize at its 2014 Rainbow Key Awards.
The awards program will take place on Tuesday, June 24 at the City Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at West Hollywood Library, 625 N. San Vicente Blvd. at El Tovar. A 6 p.m. reception will proceed the awards program at 7 p.m. Validated parking will be available at the West Hollywood Park five-story public parking structure.
This year’s Rainbow Key Awards honorees, selected by the West Hollywood City Council, are:
- Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles — Now in its 35th season, the chorus has grown to its current international renown as a group of more than 240 who use music to seek a world free from homophobia and other discrimination.
- National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) — NCJW is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates, with a strong record of supporting gay and lesbian equality, that works for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children and families.
- Noelle Carter and Valerie A. Moore — Carter and Moore are West Hollywood residents who, for the past 10 Thanksgivings, have hosted “The Long Table,” a place for LGBT people and friends who may not feel welcome elsewhere.
- Kim Rocco Shields — Kim Rocco Shields is a director, writer, producer and editor noted for her short film Love Is All You Need? (2011), which has been shown at more than 20 film festivals worldwide.
- Jeff Zarrillo, Paul Katami, Kris Perry and Sandy Stier — Zarrillo, Katami, Perry, and Stier are the named plaintiffs in Hollingsworth v. Perry, the suit challenging California’s Proposition 8 (2008). As a result of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2013 ruling in this case, same-sex marriage was permitted to resume in California.
The event will include a special presentation of the Harvey Milk Forever Stamp, recently issued by the United States Postal Service in recognition of the late San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk.
The Rainbow Key Awards honor activists, artists, civic leaders, educators and community organizations for their contributions to the LGBT community through the arts, community action, humanitarian action, sports, medicine, armed services, leadership potential or in other ways.
