WeHo Man Killed in San Diego County Hit-and-Run

UPDATE: WeHo man killed in San Diego highway accident identified as Stephen Chavez.

A young West Hollywood resident was struck by a pickup truck and killed while crossing the I-5 Freeway in San Diego County on Sunday. The San Diego County Medical Examiner has identified the man as Stephen Chavez.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported today that Chavez, 24 years old, was hit around 11:20 p.m. Sunday by a white pickup truck in the southbound lane of the freeway south of the Aliso Creek rest area near Oceanside. A report by KFMB Channel 8, the San Diego television station, quoted the CHP as saying the driver sped away after hitting the young man. The man then was hit by an SUV and several other vehicles.

The accident was one of three in which pedestrians were killed in San Diego County on Sunday. A 23-year-old man was hit and killed near University Avenue and 52nd Street by another driver who fled the scene. And a 75-year-old man was killed while in a crosswalk on East Plaza Boulevard when he was struck by a white truck, which also fled the scene of the accident.

Sorry to hear the sad news. Not sure why he was attempting to run across the freeway? That would be the last thing I would have don even if there were no cars. The way the cars come zipping down the freeway is crazy. It is the freeway.
