Is Robertson Boulevard becoming Reality TV Row? Maybe, if The Abbey succeeds in launching its own reality TV show.
TMZ reports that the West Hollywood restaurant and bar already has a production company at work on a show, and that the production company has lined up a network for it. Employees at The Abbey have told WEHOville they’ve signed up to audition.
Not that The Abbey needs more attention. It’s packed most nights and is widely viewed as the most popular gay venue in West Hollywood if not the West Coast. And it’s also seen as a good place for gay guys to take their straight friends (and for straight women to host bachelorette parties now that founder David Cooley rescinded the ban he imposed on them before LGBT marriage became legal).
Other reality TV nightspots? Down the block there is Sur, the site of “Vanderpump Rules,” the Bravo series focused on the fights and sexual tangles among the staff overseen by Lisa Vanderpump, who also is in Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.” Then there’s P.U.M.P., another Vanderpump restaurant. While not the setting for a reality TV show, it’s often packed with fans of that television genre and those who dress like they would love to perform in it.
What’s next? How about “So You Think You Can Bossa Nova”? The staff of that Brazilian restaurant on Robertson could judge prospective waiters on how well they swayed their hips to that musical fusion of samba and jazz. Or what about “Lumberjocks,” a gay version of “Vanderpump Rules.” It could be filmed at Anawalt Lumber if more of the staff were gay and had that undercut hairstyle and wore flannel shirts. And those who have proposed building a new City Hall should consider Robertson Boulevard as a location. What better place to film “The Real City Council of West Hollywood”?
“Reality” show? REALLY ?! These are ALL over-produced and an absolute joke !!! I refuse to watch them any more once I realized how they were, in some way, scripted BS.
Please don’t call me a prude
*or go ahead I could care less*
can we please apply the nudity and/or graphic sexuality standards that are forced on hetero mens clubs?
why do the Abbey-esqe bars with male dancers get a pass????
can we at LEAST close the doors or something so passerby’s don’t get unwanted bananarama???
The Abbey news is particularly depressing. David Cooley created a phenomenal bar, wisely sold about half to SBE, but then SBE completely raped the original concept for perceived profit. Ironically, it has been less busy than it was before the sale, when lines spilled down the block all weekend and you could barely move inside. I’m looking forward to Cooley’s and hoping it’s a return to an owner-operated, customer friendly bar with a predominantly gay staff.
Hopefully if they film a reality show at the Abby a suitable off street parking site can be obtained for the production vehicles.
Thats whats happening.. – everyday, I quoted it before in my op-ed, Where goes the Gayborhood here on Wehoville.
Is the City getting anything out of Vanderpump Rules and will it get anything out of this possible new one at The Abbey? If not, why allow them to clog the narrow street and disrupt traffic?
Reality TV is one thing we don’t want to be known for.
