COVID-19 numbers continued trending downward in Los Angeles County Thursday, but health officials again preached adherence to infection-control measures such as mask wearing and social distancing to avoid another surge in cases.
“LA County has made encouraging progress in all the key indicators this month,” Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said in a statement. “Let us not step backward on our recovery journey. We know from experience that gatherings, parties and the other activities we usually do with non-household members on holidays leads to increases in transmission, hospitalizations and deaths.
“Continuing to slow transmission requires limiting the number of people we interact with,” she said. “If we do not gather, we save lives.”
The warning came ahead of the three-day Presidents Day holiday weekend, which also includes Valentine’s Day, as well as Friday’s Lunar New Year.
There are 3,604 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Los Angeles County on Thursday according to that state. That’s 168 fewer people than were hospitalized on Wednesday when there were 3,772 people hospitalized.
The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098 people hospitalized.
The state reported there are currently 1,067 people in the ICU.
County health officials announced 160 more COVID-related deaths on Thursday. The county’s cumulative death toll is now 18,658 people.
The highest number of COVID deaths in a single day in the county is 318 deaths, recorded on Jan. 8, while the second highest is 316 deaths, which occurred on Jan. 30.
LA County reported 3,489 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday. The county now has a cumulative total of 1,158,619 cases since the pandemic began in March.
To date, more than 5.65 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Of those tested, an overall average of 19% are testing positive.
West Hollywood recorded 5 new cases for a cumulative total of 2,029 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative death total is 26 deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 9 new cases for a total of 2,342 cases and 25 deaths.
- Carthay neighborhood – 1 new case for a total of 848 cases and 49 deaths.
- Century City – 2 new cases for a total of 548 cases and 12 deaths.
- Culver City – 19 new cases for a total of 2,008 cases and 74 deaths.
- Hollywood – 15 new cases for a total of 4,988 cases and 55 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 29 new cases total of 7,527 cases and 177 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – 3 new cases for a total of 855 cases and 14 deaths.
- Park La Brea – 3 new cases for a total of 534 cases and 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 20 new cases for a total of 4,115 cases and 127 deaths.
The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border.
The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
