West Hollywood’s annual One City One Pride festival kicks off tonight with “Dear Harvey,” a free staged reading of Patricia Loughrey’s documentary-style ensemble play.

The event takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the City Council Chambers, 625 N. San Vicente Blvd. Those who plan to attend are asked to RSVP online.

“Dear Harvey” tells the story of LGBT activist and politician Harvey Milk, who was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977 as the country’s first openly gay politician and was assassinated in 1978.  May 22 has been designated “Harvey Milk Day” in his memory.

The event is produced by Celebration Theatre, the world’s oldest continuously running LGBTQ theatre, and will be followed by a reception. It is the first of a series of three dozen plays, musical performances, forums and art exhibits sponsored in full or in part by the City of West Hollywood. The annual Pride festival will take place June 9 and 10 at West Hollywood Park and the annual Pride parade will take place June 10.
