Stephen Dixon, the brother of West Hollywood resident Pat Dixon and a prolific author known for his idiosyncratic storytelling, has died.

The New York Times reports that Dixon, 83, died at a hospice in Towson, Md., as a result of complications of Parkinson’s disease and pneumonia.

“The author of 18 novels and hundreds of short stories, he never found fame or big sales. But his idiosyncratic storytelling drew praise,” says The Times story about Dixon.  “Mr. Dixon produced fiction at a daunting clip. Working on a portable typewriter, he published 18 novels and about 600 stories. His final story — about a man who was 80, like him, and who had a cat like his cat — was published in Heavy Feather Review last month, while he was in hospice.”

Dixon received several O. Henry Awards and Pushcart Prizes, as well as a Guggenheim Fellowship and two National Endowment of the Arts grants, The Times reports. He was a finalist for the National Book Award in 1991, for “Frog,” and in 1995, for “Interstate.”

Dixon is survived by his daughters Sophia Dixon Frydman and Antonia Dixon Frydman; a grandson; and his sisters, Marguerite Franco and Pat Dixon.

The full obituary can be accessed online.

I join Larry and Rob in issuing my deepest and sincerest condolences to Pat on the loss of her brother. When my brother Jack passed away suddenly it devastated me so I understand her pain. Unfortunately, this kind of loss never seems to get any easier with time. Thanks for honoring him I’m sure Pat will appreciate it.
