The Public Facilities Commission will review city staff members’ recommendations on the process of re-naming the West Hollywood library in honor of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at their meeting at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
The plan created by staff starts with outreach efforts to the other city advisory boards/commissions and the general public. A survey will be published online to gauge support for the re-naming effort. The Public Facilities Commission will then review the results of the outreach, likely sometime in September or October. If they decide to recommend the re-naming, it will probably reach City Council for final approval in December or January.
Though city laws forbid re-naming of public facilities sooner than two years after the subject’s death, city recommend waiving this requirement “as it is clear the accomplishments and contributions of Ruth Bader Ginsburg have had a direct impact on the West Hollywood community and will stand the test of time,” they wrote.

I think they should be named after a local activist. I love Lauren Meister, and I agree with her on most things, but she proposed this. She said this would go through a public process. As far as I can tell, there was barely any notice given, and only three of the five council members voted for this. Ivy Bottini recently passed, and she meant more to this city than RGB. The West Hollywood Library does not need any other name. It’s greatest asset is the front row view of the best architectural contribution to West Hollywood since 1975 when it received the amazing vision of Cesar Pelli from Argentina. Bravo!!
This seems rather pointless to hold a meeting on this issue now when it could be put off until the City allows for real in person meetings that would allow for more interest and participation. There is no pressing reason to move forward on this issue while we are still on political “lock down”
This is a pretentious headline-grabbing move to get West Hollywood in the national news for one day which will include pictures of the members of the city council. And we’re supposed to believe it’s really about honoring RBG. If the library HAS to be named after someone there are plenty of local WeHo historical figures to choose from.
West Hollywood is a long strip mall, running from Doheny to LaBrea on Santa Monica Blvd. with the Sunset Strip as an added feature. You would think this “city” was the second coming of Mickey Mouse!
Why doesn’t the city want to promote West Hollywood’s image by leaving the name alone. As small geographically we are gives it a sense of place. Leave the name alone.
Who freaking cares! It will always be West Hollywood Library. Such a waste of time and money.
Is it all about appearances?
If the library is named after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will that be used to raise the credibility of West Hollywood by making it appear that it is in alignment with her values?
Exactly. Of course she was an amazing person,but she literally has no connection to West Hollywood.
The precedent set by the Notorious RBG is of great significance to the lives of many Women, Minorities and LGBTQ+, something West Hollywood takes PRIDE in ❗
Well, not exactly. What they missed is the manner in which former Justice Ginsburg conducted herself at all levels of her career. The term Pride cuts both ways. If the community is seeking Unity and Acceptance, aggression is not generally the best course of action. Often magnifying the concept of other increases the divide or allows for begrudging agreement to wit the opposite occurred in her relationship with Justice Scalia.
